Often referred to as just the “Derby”, (vernacular annunciation of dArhbee)run at Epsom Downs Race Course in Surrey, England. Like the Kentucky (vernacular annunciation of Durbee), it is a race for three year old colts and fillies. It is approximately 1.5 miles. The exact distance is 2,423 metres or one mile, 4 furloughs, and 10 yards, imperially speaking that is. It predates the Kentucky Derby by almost a century and takes place on the first Saturday in June.

It is the cornerstone of British racing, debuting in 1780. After attending a race in 1779, the 12th Earl of Derby decided to create his own race. On May 4, 1780, Sir Charles Bunbury’s Diomed emerged as the winner of the first Epsom Derby. Sir Bunbury, a politician, owned three horses that won the Derby in Diomed, Eleanor, and Smolensko.
Controversy was the focus of the 1844 Derby. Running Rein, the ‘winner’ was disqualified after it was found out that a four year old, Maccabeus, ran in his place. It was all the design of a betting scandal. Abraham Goodman purportedly dyed Maccabeus’s coat to look like Running Rein. After the investigation, Goodman and his cohorts fled to France. Lord George Bentnick, then a prominent figure in the racing community, was a key player and helped to establish stricter rules.
Want drama? In 1884, Harvester and St. Gregory finished in a dead heat. That is a rare occurrence. More recently, tragedy struck the race in 1962 when seven horses fell near Tattenham Corner. Sadly, one of the horse had to be put down. The collisions also sent four jockeys to the hospital.
The Epsom Derby, the second race in the British Triple Crown, has had many unforgettable races. In 1970, Nijinsky’s come from behind in the closing of the final stretch stands out. His burst of speed after such a long distance is remarkable. Nikinsky went on to win the St Leger and having already notched the 2000 Guineas Stakes is the last winner of the British Triple Crown with a fifty-five year drought far exceeding the US Triple Crown gap from 1975 with Affirmed until 2012’s American Pharoah.
Aidan O’Brien trained Galileo won the Derby in 2001, but did not end it there. Galileo became one of the most successful sires in history, with Australia and Ruler of the World. Aidan has a long and storied history with the Epsom Derby. His stables have produced an astounding ten winners to date!
